Graduate Programmes
The graduate programme, community service and research & publication office of the college coordinates the programme. As part of the programme expansion process, the graduate programmes enrolled the first batch of its students in the first half of 2010. The scope of the graduate programme at this moment is limited to the maters level only. In broad classification, the college runs two graduate programmes. The first category refers to a project based masters programme which is launched by the dire need of the Amhara National Regional State. Candidate of this programme are selected by the regional government and would join the programme after they achieve satisfactory score in the entrance exam. The programme embodied Executive Masters of Business Administration (EMBA) and Applied Development Economics. The second category is a conventional maters programme established based on the entire labour demand of the nation. Since the launching of the programmes, placement by and large is made by the Ministry of Education (MoE). Following the aggressive expansion of the existing universities and establishment of the new ones, there is significant shortage of higher level teaching staff in various universities of the country. As a result, primary beneficiaries of these programmes are university teachers of the country. However, depending on the availability of space and other resources admission is open to applicants other than university teachers. Here below is a short profile of each programme.
1. Masters of Science in Accounting and Finance
Admission requirement & classification
Applicants must have BA degree in Accounting and Finance and entrance exams may be administered when necessary. It has both regular and continuing education (extension) programmes.
Programme objective
The programme aims to improve the knowledge, skill, research interest and carrier opportunities of the graduates thereby apply their knowledge to support the development effort of the nation.
Tips about the nature of courses
The programme encompasses thirteen courses which are to be given in four and six semesters for regular and extension students respectively. These courses would make students advance their knowledge of accounting and finance so that graduates would conduct research in their discipline, consult and audit the development sector, design accounting & finance management information system etc. Hence students enrolled in this programme will take courses on the areas of financial accounting & management, management accounting, financial markets, taxation etc and all the courses are compulsory.
Graduation requirement
A student who is eligible for graduation must:
- Successfully complete all the course(36 credit hours)
- Have a minimum CGPA of 3::00
- Successfully defend his/her thesis and score a minimum of “Fair” grade
2. Masters of Business Administration (MBA)
Admission requirement and classification
As was the case in Accounting and Finance, it admits students both in regular and extension programmes. The MBA programme accepts students having first degree in business and related fields and those who have successfully passed the entrance examination.
Programme objective
The programme is aiming at producing graduates that have adequate knowledge, skill and attitude that are pertinent to the business and development world.
Tips about the nature of courses
There are fifteen courses being managed in both programmes. The courses are broken in four semesters for regular and in six semesters for continuing education students. The last semester of the programme constitutes one course and a project work. The course give diverse knowledge to students in the areas of managing finance, markets, human resource, projects, managing change and other relevant courses in the field of accounting are included.
Graduation requirement
Graduate students will be awarded the MBA degree if they:
- Have successfully completed all the course(35 credit hours)
- Have a minimum CGPA of 3::00
- Successfully defend their project and score a “Pass” grade.
3. Executive Masters of Business Administration (EMBA)
Admission requirement and classification
It is a regular programme and candidates must have at least a bachelor degree in business or related field to join this programme.
Programme objective
This programme is one of the project based masters programme commenced as of September 2010 in collaboration with the Amhara National Regional State. It aims to provide an underpinning of both the knowledge and skill needed by senior managers at the strategic management level so that students can contribute to and improve the achievement of the organization’s strategic objectives. The programme is considered to be a special one because it is opened by the contractual agreement of BDU and the Amhara National Regional Government to capacitate strategic leaders of the region.
Tips about the nature of courses
The courses of this programme are tailored to development practioners and mainly of public sector strategic leaders which can apply their knowledge to the development effort of the region in particular and to the nation in general. Students coming from the non-business stream will be given bridging courses before starting major course work of the programme. There are thirteen courses to be given in four semesters. Students will have a practical attachment programme (summer) after completing first year courses. The courses help students scale up their knowledge of research, leadership, finance and policy, project and strategic management, business process design and analysis.
Graduation requirement
Graduation would be approved if a candidate:
- Has successfully completed all the courses(36 credit hours) with no F and D in any course
- Has a minimum CGPA of 3::00
- Successfully defends his/her project and score a “Pass” grade.
4. Masters of Science in Economic Policy Analysis (MSc in Economics)
Admission requirement & classification
Applicants must have BA degree in either Economics or Statistics and entrance exams may be administered when necessary. The programme is regular.
Programme objective
The general objective of the programme is to train qualified human resource in the field of Economics who are capable of conducting efficient economic analysis and research.
Tips about the nature of courses
The programme encompasses nine courses which are to be given in two semesters. The second year is fully dedicated to intensive and extensive thesis work. The courses capacitate students’ analytical capacity of both macro and micro policies. Econometrics and research methods would help students scale up their research skill.
Graduation requirement
A student would graduate if he/she has:
- Successfully completed all the course(24 credit hours)
- A minimum CGPA of 3::00
- Successfully defended his/her thesis and score a “Fair” grade at minimum.
5. Masters of Science in Applied Development Economics (MSc in Applied Development Economics)
Admission Requirement
Like the Executive MBA programme, this programme is also a special project commenced by the contractual agreement of BDU and the Amhara National Regional State. Applicants, however, need to have a bachelor degree either in Economics or Statistics. Applicants may also be required to pass an entrance examination.
Programme objective
This project aims to train development practioners that can immediately apply the knowledge of economics they have acquired from this training programme in their development endeavors.
Tips about the nature of courses
The curriculum of this MSc programme duly considered the real knowledge demand of the development sector. The courses are therefore tailored to help development practioners immediately apply their knowledge in the development planning and policy making process. Students enrolled in this programme will take nine courses (four core, three concentration area and two elective courses) which are to be given in three semesters. Econometrics, Advanced level Macroeconomics Advanced Microeconomics, Development Planning and Analysis, Human Resource Economics, Economics of Environment and Development, Water Resources Economics, Public Economics are nucleus courses of the programme. Students are also expected to do a yearlong MSc thesis in Economics in the second year of their study.

Similar to the aforementioned programmes students have to fulfill the following to graduate
- Successfully complete all the course(27 credit hours) with no F or D in any course
- Have a minimum CGPA of 3::00
- Successfully defend MSc thesis and score a minimum of “Fair” grade
