BDU TO HOST WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY
BDU: Teachers’ Association of Bahir Dar University will host the World Teachers’ Day in October 2012 according to the first regular annual meeting held at the Main campus.
Addressing members of the Association, Getinet Mekuriaw, the University’s Teachers’ Association Deputy Chairperson said the Association encountered a stiff competition from other Associations to host the national celebration of the World Teachers’ Day in October 2011 during the National Teachers’ Council meeting held at Dire Dawa.
‘’However, after a resounding victory at Dire Dawa’s annual meeting to host the holiday, the Association has began preparation to announce the call for papers,” Getinet told his Association members. According to him, “the annual celebration meeting is supposed to sort out and suggest possible remedies to issues that are hampering the quality of education in Ethiopian Higher Institutions.”
The objective of the annual meeting was to present a progress report about the Association, receive feedback on its draft annual plan and replace officials who were unable to function as they went away for study and research.
Getinet appealed to the University management to act on staff housing shortages, salary increment on the basis of experience, part-time payments, improved teachers’ involvement in research and community services, and introduction of social welfare as well as medical fund schemes for teachers.
On his part, BDU’s Vice President for Information and Strategic Communication, Molla Ababu, confirmed that the University had a good working relationship with the Teachers’ Association and would do everything possible to address their plight.
