BDU UNVEILS ITS GROWTH PLAN

Dr.Baylie Damtie, President of BDUBDU: Bahir Dar University has announced its expansion plan aimed at advancing its presence in Bahir Dar City and in the wider Amhara National Regional State (ANRS). The plan when implemented will see an increase in the capacity of student’s population, as well as an expansion of the number of courses offered.

While unveiling its Growth Plan to Cabinet Members of the State, the University’s President Dr. Baylie Damtie appealed to the Amhara National Regional State Government to facilitate the process of land acquisition to enable the University accomplish its dreams of increasing its students admission capacity brought about by the demand in the country as well as continue enhancing the training of creative and ignited minds the country needed for its development.

Dr. Baylie outlined the University’s objectives as increasing the diversity and number of programmes that were marketable in the competitive job market, initiating research projects that were meant to benefit the society as well as providing community service.

In his address, the University’s Administration Board Chairperson, Alemnew Mekonnen disclosed that Bahir Dar University had a vision and dream of transforming the city into a “University City” through the unreservedly support of land acquisition by the City Administration. Once the ANRS acted on the request from the University, he noted, the land would be utilized effectively as the University would ensure the improvement of the architectural beauty of the area provided as well as change the existing Millennium Park into a more “Mini Africa” without causing any extraneous hazards on the community living around the project site.

Alemnew announced that the University’s Administrative Board had finalized preparations to hold discussions with BDU community in order to introduce a mobilization plan whose implementation was expected to commence soon.

According to the Growth Plan for the future, the University is to upgrade one public school into a well furnished community school, to build a public library, to set up a biological science center, to increase the numbers of students who join Maritime Engineering, to automate students registration which it was hoped would assist parents monitor the academic progress of their children, as well as aid in the work on knowledge and technology transfer.

The University is further planning to expand its presence beyond Bahir Dar through the establishments of research centers in Lome and Areki(a place where potable water to Bahir Dar City originates), Millennium Dam, Choke Mountain, Semien Mountain and Agricultural Training Center at Enjibara.
