Diredawa Urban Risk assessment project kick of workshop In collaboration with National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC) , Diredawa City administration DRMCO, Bahir Dar University (BDU) _ Institute of Disaster Risk Management and Food Security

Diredaw Urban Risk Assessment and  Profiling Project (DURAP) was initiated last July in view of having a nationally harmonised comprehensive framework for urban risk assessment and planning to guide city administrations in Ethiopia to profile their own risk and develop DRR plans with the flexibility that account unique features of various cities. The program includes key implementing partners such as  National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC), Diredawa City administration DRMCO, Bahir Dar University (BDU) _ Institute of Disaster Risk Management and Food Security Studies  (IDRMFSS), Oxford policy Management _ Building resilience in Ethiopia (BRE) and European Union Commission.  NDRMC, overseeing the overall task of coordination and Bahir Dar University  will lead technical implementstion of the prokject. DURAP  methodology was Developed at Bahirdar during the workshop (23-25 July, 2021 ) and it was planned to launch its first urban risk assessment and profiling task at Dire Dawa city administration (Figure 1).  This kick-off workshop held during 20-22, August 2021 at Dire Dawa is therefore the realization of this plan of DURAP (Figure 1). 

 

The technical lead representative of the DURAP from Bahir Dar University, Dr. Misganaw Teshager welcomed participants and introduced workshop objectives and agendas, emphasising verification and endorcement of survey instruments and risk indicator compendium developed for Dire Dawa City. Dr. Misganaw also noted field visit arrangements for the technical team to understand the local context that shape the risk-scape of Dire Dawa City as well as the importance of having a clear analysis plan and aggreeing on the work packages and assignments of tasks among technical groups (Figure 2, 3 and 4).

The kick-off workshop was officially opened by Ato Nesibu Yasin, NDRMC Deputy Commissioner) and Ato Kedir Jewar, Deputy Mayor of Dire dawa city administration) delivered speaches emphasising the importance of designing and implimenting risk-informed development programs and confirms their commitment to fully support the technical team during the risk profiling and planning program period to be implemented in several cities including its first implimentation in Dire Dawa city administration. Finally the technical team assigns responsible working groups and sets key dates for reporting and accomplishing series of key tasks, leading to producing the complete risk profiling outputs for 9 Kebeles  of Dire Dawa city including city level risk profiling report and DRR plans. The kick-off workshop concludes with Ato Abraham’s closing remarks.

 

 

Finally in the kick of workshop BDU- IDRMFSS Teaching, research  and community engagement, NDRMC Disaster risk management experience shared. DURAP data collection and analysis proposed methodologhy discussed and upcoming DURAP program action plan developed.
