Access Micro Scholarship program Graduation

Humanities Faculty, BDU graduates more than 80 high school students who have been attending access micro scholarship program for two years.

Access micro scholarship program was an English language improvement project which was sponsored by the US embassy- Addis Ababa. Together with language improvement, the program aimed at inspiring students to engage in voluntary based community services like cleaning and helping the disabled students. Also, the selected access students who were confirmed to be economically disadvantage have been given life skills training and an orientation about the values of American culture (such as expressing oneself in public)from which they could take for their life.

Master of ceremony, Mastewal Mesfin, one of the access teachers, invited Dr Dawit Amogne for a brief speech. Dr Dawit, who was the program manager, explained how the two years journey was like. He said like any program, access was not free from challenges but thanks to the perseverance of the team the fruit of the program was a success. He took the opportunity to thank Dr Emily Boersema for her commitment starting from winning the project to its completion. He also thanked the US embassy for financing the project and the teachers for unreserved engagement in the actual job of teaching the students.

Carmelia Macfoy, the guest of honor from American Embassy-Addis Ababa handed over graduation certificates both for the graduating students and access teachers. During the handing over ceremony Carmelia Macfoy, expressed the American Government’s commitment to helping Ethiopian students be rich in English language and some important values that will add up to bringing a full-fledged development in the country. She said, in the project a total of 1000 students are believed to benefit from at a country level. Finally, she thanked access teachers and students’ parents for their support during the two years.

In the occasion, graduating high school students presented different activities: role plays/drama, songs, and conducted interviews in English. What is more, they have presented a captivating short video that summarized their two years journey in the program. This, according to access teachers who knew them starting the kick off two years ago, was an evidence to understand the impact of the program on the students English language ability.
