M.Sc. in Leather Product Design & Engineering

 Students who complete the Master's Degree in Leather products Design and Engineeringsuccessfully will have the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute to the sustainability, competitiveness, and innovation of professional activities and research related to the international leather goods, garments, and footwear industry. And to enable graduates to be creative, adaptable, problem solvers in the challenges of the professions in the rapidly changing environment that exists in the globe. They will be highly skilled and able to make decisions in approaching new ideas and solving problems in new, global environments.

   Duration and Start Date:  Two academic years, 120 TotalCP

   Timetable and delivery:  Regular learning 

   Language of instruction:  Subjects will be taught in English

    Location:  Ethiopian Institute of Textile and Fashion Technology, Bahir Dar University, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia

Admission Requirements

Applicants interested in being considered for admission should have academic backgrounds in disciplines/professions relevant to the study major of interest and are required to substantiate their keen interest in continuing their careers in areas relevant to Leather Product Design and Engineering.  Applicants must hold Bachelor of Science (B. Sc), Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.), or Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) degrees in Textile Engineering/Technology, Leather Engineering, Garment Engineering, and Fashion Technology/Engineering; with not less than 4 years of study; or documented equivalents thereof. Equivalency will be evaluated at the discretion of the program administration, based on the entrance exam, academic achievements, and profile, as well as pertinent professional experience.  Applicants must have a sound knowledge of basic engineering and sciences; including engineering thermodynamics, engineering materials, the strength of materials, mathematics, chemistry, and physics. Applicants from other engineering disciplines are also eligible for admission after completing a bridge-course program. The details of the bridge course program will be worked out on a case-by-case basis taking into consideration the requirements to follow the courses given in the Leather Product Design and Engineering (Masters) curriculum.

Entrance exam

The candidates will sit for the entrance examination to evaluate that they are equipped with the necessary basic communication to present themselves, mathematical, chemistry, physics, and fundamental Leather Product Design and Engineering and Garment Engineering/Technology concepts.

Assessment & Evaluation

The Assessment and Evaluation will be according to current rules and regulations of the Legislation of the Ethiopian Institute of Textile and Fashion Technology and the modifications, alterations, or amendments carried out by the appropriate authorities.

 Graduation Requirement

The duration of study for a Post Graduate Degree will be two complete Academic Years, out of which the last semester will be exclusively allotted to the Thesis Work. The Thesis work will be initiated in the third semester itself (Masters‟ Thesis Part I). As regards Masters‟ Thesis (Part II), the student should have completed all the prescribed courses of all the nine modules successfully with a minimum number grade of 3.00 in each of the courses. For graduation, a minimum number of 11 grades of 3.00 is required. Other requirements will be according to the prevailing rules and regulations of the university/institute approved.

    • Capable to transfer knowledge and skill in designing and manufacturing process through engaging at university capacity building
    • Implement Basic and Applied Research works to solve problems in manufacturing, process development, and improvement of existing products
    • Identify problems and offer workable solutions in the short and long-term
    • Conduct viable and techno-economic studies to establish new research projects and actual setting up of Leather designing and related units
    • Engage in the revival of sick industrial units; modernization of Leather units; improvement in production and productivity; quality improvement, and cost reduction.
    • Process control of production in the capacity of technical head
    • New Product Design and Development, Manufacturing and Finishing
    • Lead Quality Programs, Implement Quality Control, along with property analysis within the workplace following National and International Standards
    • Train cross-functional teams for quality improvement and train others in design for quality
    • Review, and analyze written data and customer comments, then identify causes and actionable items
    • Be part of the problem-solving society in making decisions
    • Conduct practical researches that contribute to innovative, optimal, and efficient use of Leather products
    • Interact effectively with experts of other disciplines
