Background

COLLEGE OF SCIENCE

BAHIR DAR UNIVERSITY

 1. TEACHING AND LEARNING

The College of Science of Bahir Dar University (BDU) is located just southeast of the Bahir Dar city within the main campus of the university along with other colleges, faculties and institutes. It is located three kilometers southeast of the center of the city and Lake Tana. The college is bounded by the Blue Nile River in the east and surrounded by dense trees.

The college has evolved as a national teaching and research wing of BDU in October 2008. Formerly, the Departments such as  Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics were under the umbrella of the Education Faculty which was established in 1972 with the objective of training primary school teachers. Later, in 1996 these diplomas offering Science Departments were further upgraded to degree level and have been training teachers for secondary schools in BED (Bachelor of Education) degree. Based on the national transformation and growth agenda of the country, the Science Departments that were under the Faculty of Education are separated and organized as a College of Science in 2008. To accomplish its mission, currently the College offers seven undergraduate programs in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Industrial Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Statistics; five master programs (Biology, Chemistry, Material Science, Physics and Mathematics), and one PhD program in Space Physics.

The College has planned to expand its undergarduate and postgraduate programs in the near future. Curricula for PhD degree in Mathematics (different specializations) amd BSc for Environmental Sciences is waiting for approval by the senate of the university. In a couple of months national curriculum review workshops will be conducted for two MSc (Statistics and Genetics) and three PhD programs (Botanical Sciences, Applied Microbiology and Condensed Matter Physics).

The college has a total of 132 teaching staff on duty of which 35 have PhD degree, 88 MSc and 9 BSc degrees. Moreover, it has 66 teaching staff on study leave; 5 of them for Postdoctoral, 44 for PhD and 17 for MSc degrees. There are also 25 laboratory technical assistants 22 of them having at least BSc degree in their fields, and 18 administrative staff.

The college is thus acting as a live national/international museum where different languages, views and understandings are aired, discussed and appreciated. In addition to teaching, the college teaching staffs are actively involved in different research, consultancy and community service activities addressing social, environmental and natural resource management issues.Currently there are 30 ongoing research projects being run by the college staff (details may be found on our website http://www.bdu.edu.et/cos/ ) and in 2013/14 alone more than 30 research works are published in peer reviewed national and international journals.

There are 4705 undergraduate, 801 graduate (MSc) and 6 doctoral degree students coming from different parts of the country.

In general, the college is working to maintain an academic atmosphere conducive to excellence in teaching and research and enforces high standards of performance to faculty and students.
