Literacy Workshop

BDU Co-organized the 2nd International Literacy Workshop

The Adult Education and Community Development Department, Bahir Dar University, co-organized the 2nd International Literacy Workshop which was organised by the University of East Anglia (UEA), UK (which has signed MoU with BDU) on the 20th May/2019 in Bahir Dar.

Bahir Dar University hosted the workshop as it is a member of the UNESCO Chair in Adult Literacy and Learning for Social Transformation, which was established in 2016 at UEA.

The theme of the 2nd International Literacy Workshop was "Adult Literacy and Learning for Sustainable Development". More than 55 local and international participants took part in the Workshop, representing Universities, International Organizations, NGOs, Government Ministries and Bureaus... Besides, this Workshop had a capacity building element for most of the Ethiopian participants in that there were different formats that are not commonly used in Ethiopia such as Quick fire Presentations, World Cafe, Harvesting, and Poster Presentations, apart from the commonly known 20 min. presentation.

The UNESCO Chair in which BDU is a member is working on different capacity building activities including: research, publication and curriculum development. Different collaborative research undertakings, journal article publications, capacity building activities and workshops have been taking place since its establishment in 2016.

Very recently as a result of the discussion and action points of the BDU Workshop, the UNESCO Chair has won a grant from a UK funder to undertake a research project in the member universities and countries on family literacy. (More information about the UNESCO Chair can be found on: https://www.uea.ac.uk/education/research/areas/literacy-and-development/unesco-chair).

Now, the Workshop Report, its summary in Amharic and English are finalized.

UEA has put it on its website: http://bit.ly/BDU-workshop-report

The UNESCO Chair Holder is Professor Anna Robinson-Pant and she has visited BDU twice (during this workshop and 2 years ago). In the previous visit, she also undertook a writing for publication Workshop, a Public Lecture on Qualitative/Ethnographic Research and a discussion with all the BDU Journal Editor-in-Chiefs (later followed by 2 of BDU's Journal Editor-in-Chiefs taking part in a Workshop held in Egypt a year ago).
