Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia visits Bahir Dar University

The Chinese ambassador to Ethiopia Mr. Tan Jain and members of the delegation from Chinese Embassy visited Bahir Dar University.

In his welcoming speech, Dr. Firew Tegegne, President of Bahir Dar University said that BDU is very much indebted to work with the Chinese Embassy to Ethiopia and Chinese higher education institutions. The president said Chinese language has been taught in the university at a small scale level, in the form of trainings to students and other interested members of the University community but has been strengthening itself over time. According to the president, there is now a plan to launch Bachelor Degree in Chinese program in the Faculty of Humanities, Bahir Dar University.

Dr. Zewdu Emiru V/President for Information and Strategic Communication of BDU presented a brief overview about Ethiopia, Bahir Dar city and the University. After the presentation, the Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia explained Chinese government’s interest towards Africa in general and Ethiopia in particular. The ambassador in his speech reminded the long lasting diplomatic relationship between Ethiopia and China. He added the Embassy is highly interested to work with higher education institutions in Ethiopia. In particular, the ambassador unfolded Chinese government‘s willingness to support universities like Bahir Dar which is doing good in fields like Textile and Fashion Technology.

The Ambassador thanked the university for including the Chinese language into the curriculum and for launching Confucius institute to teach Chinese language for foreigners/Ethiopians.
