CED's Message

Welcome to Bahir Dar University College of Medicine and Health Sciences (BDU-CMHS) website. The College of Medicine and Health Sciences was established in October 2007 as one of the colleges of the Bahir Dar University, which was established in May 2000 by the amalgamation of Bahir Dar Polytechnic Institute (founded in 1963) and Bahir Dar Teachers’ College (also called Academy of Pedagogy) (established in 1972).

The College of Medicine and Health Sciences has evolved from a medical school training medical doctors only, to a fully-fledged University College comprising of School of Medicine, School of Public Health and School of Health Sciences. Currently, the college hosts ten (10) distinct undergraduate and twenty two (22) graduate programs (15 masters programs, 6 clinical specializations, and 1 PhD program) serving over 3,000 students and including over 550 academic staff. The college will soon (in 2020 G.C) open 2 undergraduate programs, 2 master programs, 3 PHD, 2 Clinical Specializations, and 4 clinical fellowships (subspecialties) and increase its academic programs to 43 (12 undergraduate and 31 graduate programs).

The new and main campus (Tibebe Ghion Campus (TGC)) and University Hospital (Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital (TGSH)), being equipped with a state-of-the-art technology, is helping us transform education, service provision, research and innovation in medical and health sciences.

We are also naturally and geographically blessed as we are located on the outskirt of the vibrant Bahir Dar city (one of the ten most beautiful cities in Africa and one of the twelve UNESCO Learning Cities Awardee of 2015) about 10 km south from the city center on the way to Adet District and about 23 km from the famous tourist destination, the Blue Nile Falls (locally called ‘Tis Esat’ (Smoke of Fire)).

Our Vision is to "To be the leading health science institutions for academic, research, clinical care and community service excellence in Ethiopia and beyond."

As a mission: "we are dedicated to improving the health of the people of Ethiopia and beyond, and promoting health equity by providing demand-driven quality education, research and health services. We archive this by enhancing capacity and participation of stakeholders; strengthening systems and partnerships; and harnessing the power of new sciences, innovation and appropriate technology so as to unfreeze the status-quo, and build and sustain excellence and relevance."

Since its inception a decade ago, the College has undergone several crucial developments and has become one of the top Medical and Health Science College in Ethiopia. You are very welcome to explore this website and partake in these decisive developments, happenings and strategic directions/initiatives in the College. We highly value your constructive comments, suggestion and out-of-the-box ideas to make this visionary young college a better place for education, patient care, research , innovation and technology transfer.
