About the School

Dean’s Message

Academic community, researchers, practitioners and all stakeholders, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the School of Public Health (SPH), College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Bahir Dar University; located in the beautiful city of Bahir Dar at the heart of Lake Tana and Blue Nile. Thank you visiting our website. The School of Public Health has been passionately offering quality education and training tomorrow’s public health educators, researchers and leaders who will be able to improve the health of the local communities, the nation and around the globe.

Our mission at the School of Public Health is to produce competent public health professionals capable to provide evidence driven, need based promotive, preventive and rehabilitative services. It is also the early responsibility of the School of Public Health to create solutions for a healthier community by advancing public health knowledge through research, service and public health education. Our view of public health is broad, diverse and inclusive in disciplines, people and perspectives. We anticipate future health threats and challenges and accelerate improved public health solutions. The school is committed to conduct demand driven problem solving public health research, quality education, community/consultancy services and technology transfer to contribute to the socio-economic development of the nation. We look forward to bridging the gap between academic, research and practical public health solutions.

We’re very much zealous about our vision: to be one of the known public health training institute in quality education, research, consultancy, and community services in Africa by 2025. At the School of Public Health, we value quality inter-professional education, research and practice; community engagement, professionalism, innovation, solidarity and team work to develop public health leaders prepared to work in inter-disciplinary settings.

The School of Public Health is home to a vibrant and diverse scholarly community that embodies different experiences and viewpoints to undertake values-guided, evidence-based high-quality teaching research and student mentoring. Due to these realities, the School of Public Health has managed to launch eight postgraduate programs (MPH-General, MPH in Reproductive Health, MPH in Epidemiology and MSc in Field Epidemiology, MPH in Public Health Nutirion, MPH in Health Promotion,  MPH in Health Systems and Project Management, and MPH in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) and one PhD program (PhD in Public Health) with in short period of time. Currently, the school has over 250 postgraduate students in those programs.

In addition to the academic achievements, all most all of the staffs in School of Public Health have been involved in different research activities and have been publishing their research findings in peer-reviewed high impact journals and contributed in the scientific world. These are the showcases of the ongoing efforts of our school in teaching-learning, research and community services/practice.           

Therefore, I would like convey my kindest message to all the stakeholders, national and international organization to work with a strategically guided School of Public Health at Bahir Dar University. We highly encourage and welcome any national and international collaboration in public health research, capacity building activities, staff and student exchange and consultancy activities.
