Animal Nutrition

MSc in Animal Nutrition (Draft)

Objectives of the program

The program is intended to develop the trainee’s ability to contribute and make innovations for sustainable development (through application of principles and new technologies in the animal nutrition) and management of farm animals and feed sector. The candidate undergoing through the program will be capable of developing research strategies in animal nutrition and designing and implementing on-station and on-farm research trials pertinent to animal feeding and nutritional impact in order to reverse the chronic problems animals facing in the quantity and quality of feed supply, thereby alleviating one of the major bottlenecks in various animal production systems.

Graduate profile

The utilization of naturally available feed resources in the diet of animal is untapped area. This indicating that there is shortage of professionals specialized in animal nutrition in different institutions such as academic, research, agricultural offices, consultant offices and non-governmental organizations involved in animal husbandry. Therefore, graduates of this program will be equipped in technical skills and knowledge and engaged in academic institutions to produce professionals of the same in sustainable manner and involved in animal nutrition research topics, they will also be involved in research institutions to be involved in regional and national animal nutrition thematic area with the objective of efficient locally available feed resource utilization; adaptation trial of improved and introduced forages; characterization of non-conventional feed resources and adopt different pasture and range management techniques. They also expected to work in consultant services and nongovernmental organizations help the rural animal producers and the emerging urban producers in animal nutrition related matters.

Admission requirements/ General entry requirements

Applicants must have completed the academic requirements for the Bachelor’s of degree in Animal Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry or other related sciences from accredited higher learning institutions. The candidate must pass qualifying (entrance) examination in the field of study. The candidate must be supported by at least three letters of recommendation preferably from the candidates under graduate instructors, employers and professional associations.

Program requirements

Candidates with a different background other than Animal Sciences may be required to take some prerequisite courses from the under graduate program. These courses will be worked out/assigned by the Department Graduate Council (DGC) and approved by the Council of Graduate Studies (CGS).

Duration of the study

This MSc Animal Nutrition program is a two year program for regular students and a three-year program for summer students. Regular and summer students will have one year (two semesters) and two years (two summers), respectively, course work and one year for research project in a specified area of specialization which be approved by the Department of Graduate Committee (DGC) established in the department of Animal Production and Technology.

Assessment and Evaluation

Graduate student progress is assessed regularly and formally by the college through assigned department supervisors. The assessments focus on both completion of coursework and development of professional skills in formulating scientific research proposals and writing scientific research paper through the following methods.

Course work: Term paper assignments, Tests, Quizzes, Mid-semester exam, Final-exam, Seminars

Practical courses: Laboratory reports /field reports, Practical examination, Written examination

Thesis, seminars and reports presentation: Quality of paper presented, Ways of presentation, Defending material presented, Confidence of the presenter

Graduation Requirements

The Master of Science degree program in Animal Nutrition has a course work requirement of 32 credits and six credits of research, which should be documented in a thesis that will be subject to an open defense examination in public.

The MSc degree in Animal Nutrition is awarded to a candidate, who has satisfied the general SGS graduation requirements, scored above ‘B’ grade and only one ‘C’ grade in the examinations for the courses in the program and successfully defended the MSc. thesis.

Degree Nomenclature

The degreed conferred on successful candidates will be called in English: THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN “ANIMAL NUTRITION”; in Amharic============
